Personal stories are an important part of our history and one organization, StoryCorps, is dedicated to the recording our anecdotes. This year, Storycorps will celebrate their 10th year in operation as a charitable not-for-profit organization and their milestone event will be hosted by Stephen Colbert himself on October 30th.
If you’re not familiar with Storycorps, StoryCorps operates a number of specialized initiatives dedicated to helping Americans record their stories, no matter where in the country they’re located or what their stories are about. Program topics range from the stories of the nation’s Hispanic population to the men and women serving in the armed forces, from one dedicated to September 11th memories to the memories of those with age-related memory loss.
Most importantly, they don’t need to be epic tales of adventure to be meaningful and valuable. Understanding what life was and is like for other Americans helps us shape our own perspective on where we really are in our own lives, and as we celebrate the stories that are recorded, we should also celebrate those who dedicate themselves to actually doing the recording.
If you’re interested in learning more about StoryCorps and how you can have your stories recorded, visit their website at www.storycorps.org to see their various recording locations and schedules.
