These days everyone from grandparents to grandchildren are online. Take advantage of technology to stay connected with distant family members by setting up a Family Website.
A Family Website is a great way to share photos, stories, family history, current events important dates and more. Below are a few tips to help you get started with your family website.
Your Family Website
To start, you will need to register a domain name that is unique to your family. Many companies such as Google, Dreamhost, GoDaddy and WordPress offer Domain Name Registration. They also offer easy guides and templates to choose from.
Once you’ve selected a template, site design and color scheme, just start adding pages. Easy as that. Below are a few page ideas but feel free to add more.
Family Website Page Ideas
- About
Highlight the family story and include a bit about the family’s journey to its present day. - Family Tree
Upload an image of your family tree for everyone to reference. - Family History
Invite older family members to share what they remember about the family history and passed family members as well as their own stories. - Family Photos
Don’t limit yourself to just current family photos. Scan old family photos and post those as well. (Ask older family members to fill in information about these images.) Before you know it, you’ll have a visual record of your family story! - Honors
Feature the senior most family members by including brief biographies as well as any stories they may want to share. - Family Calendar
Include birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, events and family reunion dates for others to refer to in planning their own activities. - News/Current Events
Is cousin John graduating from college? Has Aunt Sally run a marathon? Select someone as the Public Relations Contact for your family website and have family members send their most important announcements. Post news on the Family Website according to a monthly schedule so everyone can stay up-to-date. - Contact
Give family members the option to add their email address, home address and phone number so everyone can stay in touch!
Family Website Services
Need a little help setting up? There are several web services that feature private platforms for families to post news, list relatives, and send messages. Good ones to try are: ‘EasySite’, ‘Organizeus’ or ‘Myfamily’.
For questions to ask older family members to learn about their life stories and your family history, visit my post: ‘Legacy Questions’.

Give your parent or grandparent the gift of a lifetime by capturing their life story in a Legacy Video!

Here at Family Tree Video we produce Legacy Videos, modern-day memoirs that weave a filmed interview with a parent or grandparent together with family photos, documents, maps and other memorabilia. The result is a beautiful “moving portrait” capturing your loved one sharing their life story, family history and memories – a gift your family will treasure for generations to come.

Pretty nice post. I just stumbled upon your weblog
and wanted to say that I’ve really loved browsing your blog posts.
Thank you!
Very useful post. Family is the smallest organization of society. Every family should have a family website on own domain name. It will help to continue digital legacy among generations.
