Tips for Recording a Parents Stories

Tips for Recording a Parents Stories by Family Tree Video

A parents stories are priceless. Preserving them today gives your children, grandchildren and generations beyond a chance to know their story. Recording a parent sharing memories – in their own words – makes it even more special.

As a Legacy Video producer, interviewing parents and grandparents about their life stories and family history is my job. Below are a few of my tips for recording your parent (or grandparent) sharing memories.

Tips for Recording a Parents Stories

1. Set the Stage
Choose a comfortable and quiet environment where your parent or grandparent feels relaxed and can speak freely.

2. Be Prepared
Research your family history beforehand to prompt specific questions or topics that can help guide the conversation. Your questions can help jog their memory and encourage them to share more detailed stories.

3. Recording Devices
Use audio or video recording equipment to capture their stories in their own voice. This preserves the authenticity and emotional nuances that the written word often cannot convey.

4. Active Listening
Show genuine interest and actively engage with their storytelling. Maintain eye contact, nod, and ask follow-up questions to encourage them to delve deeper into their memories.

5. Respect their Pace
Allow your parent to share stories at their own pace. Don’t rush or interrupt them. Sometimes, moments of silence can invite even more profound reflections.

6. Preserve Context
Ask about the historical and cultural context of their stories. This adds depth and richness to their narratives and helps younger generations understand their world at the time.

7. Include Visuals
Supplement the stories with photographs, old family albums, or heirlooms that can help evoke memories and create a more immersive experience.

8. Express Gratitude
Show appreciation for their willingness to share their memories and the insights gained. Let them know how much parents stories mean to you and future generations.
